Good vibes since 2015
Whether it’s canoeing through a wildlife habitat in Costa Rica, learning to jet ski in her 70’s or vowing to raise her kids close to skiing, camping and other outdoor sports, Flo has always been a big believer in having fun and stepping outside of her comfort zone. And applying for a cannabis store license lottery at age 81 is yet another example of her “give it a try” attitude.
When Washington State decided to start a cannabis store license lottery, Flo’s kids told her she should apply; “you’re always winning contests” they reminded her. Flo thought about it for a while then decided she would give it a try - she had just as much chance to win as anyone else.
Always the lucky one, Flo won a cannabis store license. She scraped together her modest savings and - with a little help from family - got to work. It took about a year of planning, building, painting and hiring staff but Flo kept at it until she opened The Top Shelf in January, 2015. At 82 she was the oldest person in the US to open a cannabis store - and today, she may still hold that title.
For a short time in late 2015, Flo considered selling The Top Shelf but after putting her store on the market and getting a lot of national attention she decided to pull back. “I’m just not ready to give up such an exciting new adventure” she decided. In 2018 Flo decided to work on another of her life goals; to play golf up and down the West Coast, so she hired her children to manage the store and started her new pursuit. She now travels to and from the Palm Springs area depending on the weather. When home in Spokane, Flo stops by the store several times a week so be sure to say hello if you see her there.

To keep this aspiration alive, Flo has remodeled The Top Shelf every few years. In 2020 she and her kids decided the timing was right to create a warm and cozy feel with wood floors, barn-board walls and lots of plants. They got busy and remodeled the store for a third time - and this remodel might be the best yet!

They want you to feel comfortable asking questions about our products and if you’re not sure what you need, they can guide you through the process.
